God Wants YOU!

Out of billions of people in the world the fly in the room wants YOU! - Anon

Jesus often went out of His way to reach those nobody wanted. You ever been that person? Amen!

God doesn't need you. That's right, He doesn't! The creator of the universe and all therein doesn't need anyone or anything - He is completely perfect. Within Himself. By Himself. For God to need anything would make Him imperfect. So, He doesn't need you, me. or anyone else. There, it's said. BUT, He wants you. Yes, you, me, and everyone. He wants us for relationship. Not arms length, but intimate, close, one-on-one relationship. To love, cherish, embrace, and to lavish His blessings on. To be there when it seems nobody else is. To give our life meaning, purpose, and understanding. To let you know you really do matter and have great value. And who amongst us doesn't WANT a friend like that? Praying you'll want a little more of God in the NEW YEAR!

Seeing the Hidden Opportunities

We are all continually faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as unsolvable problems. – J. W. Gardner

Moses as leader of the Israelites, is the prime example of developing faith on the job. AMEN!

The internet. A great tool of invention that opens us up to a host of opportunities to communicate, research, do media, and even do commerce. However, it is also a tool fraught with pitfalls and danger. It requires a little work to “surf” the web successfully. Similarly, every day and moment God grants us is an opportunity to bring glory to Him. Every individual we meet is an opportunity to share Christ’s love with them. Yes, opportunities abound, but like the internet they require a little effort or “work” to be beneficial. That’s how we grow.

Laws of Attraction

Who you are is who you attract. – J. Maxwell

The Three Mighty Men. The Thirty Chief Men. Though David was king of Israel, he was a warrior at heart and attracted other warriors. Simply Amazing!

Science teaches us that certain animals emit pheromones to attract or warn others of the same species. It’s a natural body function for sustaining the species. When it comes to our life and relationships the same chemistry applies. The people and the problems we attract are not determined by what we want, but by who we are. If we’re selfish, non-committal, and drifting, that’s who we’ll attract. If we’re honest, self-less, and God-fearing; that’s who we’ll attract. If we want to attract a better class, then we need to improve ourselves first. The good news is we don’t have to stay the way we are unless we feel we’re already perfect. God has granted us this day for changing.

Friend or Foe? Love Em Both!

The Bible tells us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies; probably because they are generally the same people. - G.K. Chesterton

Jesus preached, loved, and reached out to sinner and saint alike, often converting the former to the latter. AMEN!

“Friend or foe!” was the shout given by the sentry when someone unknown approached his station. Their answer would then dictate his response, whether to relax and receive them or to prepare to defend his post. Though we don’t shout it today we are in a similar position, however our charge is only to befriend in either case. And though we say it’s hard to do so, it really isn’t if we let the Holy Spirit rule in our life. The love of God is unconditional and the Spirit of God within us will manifest that love if we submit our will to Him. It may seem irrational and hard at times, but when it does all we need do is just imagine God loving us at all.

Peaceful Living

The way to win an atomic war is to make sure it never starts. – Omar Bradley

To save his life Jacob’s mother sent him away to relatives he’d never met. It was a wise move. Hmm!

If you think about it, war is actually a last resort. It is the result of failed attempts to resolve an issue, and atomic war is a desire to completely annihilate the enemy. Often, if we’re not careful we find ourselves not only in a war, but an atomic one, ruing the birth of our enemy. This should not be, for as people of God we’re called to live at peace with our neighbor. It’s not easy at times, but we must remember God will not accept excuses at the door of heaven. The way to win a fight - keep the peace. The way to win an argument – speak only in love. And the way to best Satan – stay in company with God. Peace, I leave with you!

The Humble Life

There is nothing noble about being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self. – Hindu Proverb

Jesus, though Kings of Kings, was able to connect with the ‘common’ man because he made himself common to man. Hmm!

In sports we want to overpower them. On the job we want to show them up. Even in the church we want to show them we’re holier. From our early upbringing we’re taught competition settles most things, and no one likes a loser. So we pattern our lives this way. Competition is okay in sports. But life itself is neither a competition nor an audition; it is character preparation before God. The noble man knows regardless of his blessings, talent, and surroundings, he is no better than his fellow man and that his overall success is actually somewhat tied to that of his fellow man succeeding as well, which should keep us all honest. After all, I’ve never met anyone who liked eating ‘humble pie.’

Let Your Life Do the Talking

The good and the wise lead quiet lives. Euripides

The moment Eve started ‘debating’ God’s word with Satan she lost, and eventually so did we. Thank God for redeeming love in Christ Jesus.

It’s often been said “many an argument is sound – and just that, SOUND!” When you step back and think about it there is a lot of truth to that. Often if we’re not careful, we’ll find ourselves with raised voices and raised heart rates being argumentative to ‘prove’ our point, or case, or situation. But the best argument we could ever present for Christ and His church is not by our vocabulary but by how we live our life. It’s true that sometimes it’s hard to keep our words edifying, encouraging, and fragrant; however, Jesus said they will know we are his disciples if we show “LOVE for one another.”

Growth Through Persecution

A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at them. – D. Brinkley

Even as he hung there dying on the cross the people continued to insult Jesus. He never said a word but yet built the firmest foundation a man can have – SALVATION!

If there is one thing we know as a certainty, it’s that we will be persecuted. It matters not whether it be family, co-workers, church members, or even our friends; persecution seems to come in abundance at times. But the desire of God in all of this is that we take these opportunities to grow our character in a way that lets the light of Christ shine forth in our lives. The greatest success is not to get back at our opponents but to “shake off” the dirt they throw upon us and “step up.” Done enough we’ll rise as more and more dirt falls to the ground to build upon. True, it’s hard work; for nothing worth having ever comes easy, but the rewards are much sweeter.

He's Searching for You

The bible is not only a bleeding book but also a pleading book. – HD. Rutherford

Much prayer and concern was offered up for Sodom and Gomorrah, but to no avail. All was lost to God’s wrath. OUCH!

We call them bloodhounds, hunting dogs. They are tracking dogs; give them a ‘scent’ and off they go, and go, tirelessly seeking their prey. In that sense, Our Christ operates the same way. He refuses to be ignored, He never gives up. We have tried for over 20 centuries to escape Him, elude Him, ignore Him, discredit Him, smear Him, and yet after all our endeavors, denials, and put-downs He still pursues us. He won’t turn back. We can try like Pilate to wash our hands of Him, or like so many others to deaden our souls cry for Him through the slumbering offerings of this world, but He still seeks us. The one who bled for us and pled for us still searches for us – with open arms! Why, only to love us and save us before the one day comes when He will have to judge us. Hopefully, we’ll tire of running before that day comes.

Secret Prayer Work

Public victories are always won in private closets. – J. Graham

Jesus, our example; often went to lonely places and prayed. AMEN!

Any good soldier knows that though wars are fought in the trenches, victorious strategies are drawn up in areas away from the battlefield. The same is true for those of us who are in the Lord’s Army. We must come to a recognition that prayer is the work, the HARD WORK that begets the ear and activity of Almighty God. And it’s the realization in our prayers and requests that whatever we are asking is for the glory of God, the strengthening of the kingdom, and the extension of His blessings upon others; that moves God’s heart. If we would assure victory for God in our lives it just makes sense to plan strategy with him. Don’t think prayer, just pray!

Put Worry to Flight

Just keep in mind: the more we value things outside our control, the less control we have. Epictetus

When Daniel got news of the kings new edict on 'worship' all he did was pray like before. God saved him. Amen!

Fire and water! Light and darkness! Though linked together by the 'and' the truth is these 2 items just don't go together, no way, no how. One will always overshadow/overpower the other. Thinking along these lines should give us a greater understanding of why God tells us not to worry. Why, because worship and worry cannot inhabit our heart at the same time. They, like the others mentioned above can't dwell together. If I'm truly worshiping, I'm not worrying. If I'm worried sick I'm not worshiping. Life will always present anxious or troubling moments to us, and what's in our heart will dictate our response. God's Word will bring calm, praise, worship, and prayer, putting worry to flight. So, the question is what are we actually 'hiding' in our hearts.

Until Monday...

The Way to a Brighter Day

I glory in conflict that I may hereafter exult in victory. - Frederick Douglass

Matthew the tax collector hated his job and was hated by his people. Along came Jesus. AMEN!

Life as we experience it can sometimes appear overwhelming, and it happens every day, like clockwork. It can often get on top of us and smother us, suck all the hope, joy, and pleasure out of us if we're not careful. That friend, is our enemies goal. To keep us so preoccupied, so self-absorbed with a defeatist attitude that we seem to stay in a gloomy, doomsday frame of mind. Hopeless despair. But life is a gift from God, not to be endured but lived to the fullest with great joy. The most critical step to overcoming the enemy's attack is to believe there is a WAY, and then to seek that WAY. Jesus assures us there is a way and HE is it. He is not just the WAY to the Father, He is the WAY to all of life. He is the 'bread' of life, 'living' water, the 'truth', the 'source' of joy and above all 'victorious' over all things. So all we really need to do is re-focus. Stop looking at life and look at Jesus.

What It Takes to Emulate

Someone once told me growth and comfort do not coexist. G. Rometty

The disciples, Paul, Timothy....they pretty much changed their whole way of living to follow Jesus. It worked. Hmm!

It is often said that the first thing dieters lose is their good mood or disposition! After all, who wants to miss out on all the goodies, especially when there are festive ‘traditional’ holiday meals to partake of? But in truth a diet doesn’t always have to involve the refrigerator. We can put our wallets and credit cards on a diet to “fit” into a budget. We can cut back on TV and get more sleep or rest. We can spend less time on Facebook, and more time with our face in God’s book. The bottom line is the only way to really change who we are is by changing our daily agenda – doing a little something different each day, eventually making it a good habit. The way to grow more like Jesus is to do the things He did. Today is as good as any to start.

Weathering the Storms

Jesus Christ is not a security from storms. He is the perfect security in storms. – K. Troccoli

When the storms raged against the ship, the disciples were amazed at what Jesus did to calm it down. Hmm!

Rainstorms, snowstorms, blizzards, hurricanes, etc. All the work of nature, and all beyond our control. The best we can do is prepare for them for we know they will come, so we buy special clothing and other gear to help us muster through them. But often in matters of faith, many of us treat or think of our faith as some sort of magic shield that will keep trouble or the storms of life away from us, or that we won’t have heartache, pain, or problems because we’re protected by Jesus. We forget that ‘Jesus was in all points tempted just as we are, yet without sin.’ This tells us he suffered in “human flesh” just as we do, yet He did not give in to the sinful nature, which should give us strength and encouragement when the storms of life assail us. So as life unfolds, and it will, just remember to put on Jesus to weather the storm.

Check In and Listen

Feedback is the breakfast of champions. – B. Hybels

Jesus once asked his disciples ‘who do you say that I am?’ to make sure they were getting the message he was conveying. Peter knew the answer. AMEN!

Product surveys, town-hall meetings, suggestion boxes, etc. – what do they all have in common – they are ways people solicit feedback to see how they are doing and what they can do better. They go directly to the source – you. Jesus did it often with his Father as an example for us to follow. The best way to ensure we’re carrying out God’s plan and not our own is to check with Him often and take time to listen to what He says. He’s already assured us in His book of the victory.

Kindness is Contagious

Never underestimate the power of a planted seed. - Anon

Jesus said a tiny mustard seed provided 'apartment housing' for many birds. Hmm!

The movie 'Pay It Forward' highlighted the truism that one good deed deserves another. The movie tried to capture the links between the initial good deed and how far along it went sparking others. The bottom line was that you never really know the total impact 1 random act of kindness can generate, because kindness is often very contagious. And though in life it would be nice to see our expressions of kindness returned or passed on, that should never be the reason for us to act. When we act and live out our faith in love, it will indeed bear fruit, even if we don't personally see the results. We trust God for the outcome. It truly is great to be blessed by God, but to be a blessing to someone else is a far greater reward.

What Must I Do?

Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself. - Leo Tolstoy

"What must I do to be saved?" That Ethiopian eunuch asked the best question ever. Amen!

Though there is always constant chatter about it, most people fight against change, especially when it affects them personally. For most, complacency is a great state to live in. The irony of life is that as much as we might fight against it, change is inevitable. Everyone has to deal with it. No one gets a free pass. On the other hand though, growth is optional; a choice we must make in light of the changes. To bemoan or resist life's changes is to let circumstances dictate to you (i.e. "woe is me.".), but to face the changes and continue to progress in life is God's desire for us as over-comers and conquerers! The difference between being successful and unsuccessful is not in ability, but in desire. The question is still "what must I do?"

Until tomorrow...
