Guarding Against A Silent Killer

Pharaoh’s heart was so hardened toward God and his people, that it cost him not only his pride, and his son, but his army in the Red Sea as well. OUCH!

High cholesterol is a silent attacker of the human body. It may take years but if left unchecked it begins to build blockages in the arteries (hardening) restricting life supplying blood flow. Hardening of the attitudes (heart) works in the same manner. If we’re not careful it will silently creep into our nature to where we are completely unaware that we have become hardened. We begin to snap at others, project hateful speech at certain groups, and find it plenty hard to practice grace. That’s why time in the word, meditation, and prayer are so important – not only are they good medicine – but they tend to make a happy heart.

Flavor of the Earth

Dorcas' small 'gifts of love' had a very profound impact on the community around her. Hmm!

Think about it, the only time you notice it is by its absence or its overbearing presence. What is it? - Salt! Almost every recipe calls for it, even sweets like cake and ice cream - go figure. Mixed in right proportions salt dissolves and brings out the best of the ingredients around it. It's what Jesus had in mind when He referred to us as 'salt of the earth.' We're to blend in at just the right proportion to bring out the best in others. Could you imagine if The Church held such sway over culture this way. That's our purpose, to transform the 'flavor' of life all over the world for Christ. Let's get cooking!

Still Seeking Souls

Much prayer and concern was offered up for Sodom and Gomorrah, but to no avail. All was lost to God’s wrath. OUCH!

We call them bloodhounds, hunting dogs. They are tracking dogs; give them a ‘scent’ and off they go, and go, tirelessly seeking their prey. In that sense, Our Christ operates the same way. He refuses to be ignored; He never gives up. We have tried for over 20 centuries to escape Him, elude Him, ignore Him, discredit Him, smear Him, and yet after all our endeavors, denials, and put-downs He still lovingly pursues us. He won’t turn back. We can try like Pilate to wash our hands of Him, or like so many others to deaden our souls cry for Him through the slumbering offerings of this world, but He still seeks us. The one who bled for us and pled for us still searches for us – with open arms! Why, only to love us and save us before the one day comes when He will have to judge us. Hopefully, we’ll tire of running before that day comes.

Simon the sorcerer thought he was a great man until he met the men of God, then he realized he was a sinner in need of grace. Hmm!

We see them all the time – stars, politicians, athletes, etc. – demanding special treatment or recognition because of who they are. It’s a battle we all fight at times – pride, ego, boastfulness. We want to be recognized and seen for all we have done or accomplished, we want others to know of our greatness, the sweat and toil we put in to ‘make ourselves into something.’ But truth be known, no matter how great or renown we become it is all by the grace of God, a gift of the Master for His glory. Public accolades and recognition are great but when we covet them, live for them, and begin to demand they be given we’re treading on dangerous ground. Ours is not to live for praise and adulation but for service.

Choose Wisely

Moses refused to be known as Pharaoh’s son, choosing to be with his people. God made him more famous than Pharaoh ever was. Amen!

We live in a world where people believe many things about how they arrive at certain critical situations in life (Karma, Fate, Kismet, Déjà vu, etc.). The reality of life is all of our situations are based on the choices or decisions we made along the way. It was not Fate, Karma, Kismet or any other thing that put us in a bad relationship, bad health, or a financial bind, nor put us on easy street if that's where we are; it was choices we made. The good news is regardless of where we are now, God is offering us the opportunity to make changes in our current situation and make our eternal destiny secure. We must make sure we choose wisely from today’s activities.

Seeking Silence

On the mount, God showed Elijah a lot of noisy events before He spoke to him in a whisper. Whoa!

Shhh! Be quiet! Hush! Familiar words to us all. It's the request for silence. Generally, the only time we seek it is when we want to be heard or we want to go to sleep. From the moment we wake our days are filled with noise. From early morning TV/Radio checks for news or weather, to cell phones ringing or pinging, even to gospel music filling our ears, we're taking in some input. Then it's off to work/school, etc., with the noises of the day. We're on the go until we return home late, tired and worn out, our minds still trying to sort through all the days noisy inputs. Maybe we need to add more silence to our day - not for speaking or sleeping - but listening for God. The psalmist wrote "Be still and know that I am God!" a reminder that we should willfully and intentionally seek quiet moments with God throughout the day. Thinking along these lines I can see why Daniel did it at least 3 times a day. It's a reminder of who we are and WHO GOD IS, but it is also very refreshing. Pray on!

We Are Somebody To Bring Glory To God

What is man that you are mindful of him....? Angelic question

Gideon didn't rightfully know who he was. God called him "mighty warrior." AMEN!

Isaiah tells us God knows each star by name (Isa. 40:26). And then Paul later adds that each star presents its own glory to God (I Cor. 15:41). Wow! It's sort of mind boggling to dwell on such facts when you consider the vastness of the universe. Billions and billions of stars - yet our Great God knows each one and receives glory from them. Now consider the truth He made each of us on a much higher plane (in His image) and 'crowned' us with glory and honor. So not only are we somebody, we are somebody with a purpose - GOD. He is truly mindful of us, but the greater question I think we need to consider is: are we truly mindful of Him? The day ahead of us, with all its challenges will provide us ample opportunity to bring glory to Him.

God's Story Told Through Us

God created man because He loves storytelling. – Elie Wiesel

Moses went to Egypt not only to free the Israelites, but to tell Pharaoh GOD’S STORY! Hmm.

It’s very true that God is for us, but the bigger picture is God is all about being God. He wants every one to know Him for who He is, what He has done, and what He can and will do in their lives, and He uses ordinary people like you and I to tell His story through. Granted our life may not be like Moses’, Esther’s, David’s or even Paul’s, but God has already told His story through them. He wants to now tell it through us. The daily circumstances and situations in our lives only serve to add color to the story. What is more important is that we make sure the mute is off and the sound is properly adjusted that others may hear.

Oftentimes when we’re up against life, and our circumstances or relationships are overbearing and taxing us, or our resources are thread-bare and stressing us, we forget about the God who has brought us thus far, or we feel like He can’t handle this one. But if earth has no problems heaven can’t solve we must keep trusting Him in all situations, and see things from His perspective and purpose, knowing that His purposes are always for our good.

Light Bearers

Jesus called the Pharisees/Sadducees 'hypocrites,' because their brand of religion focused on them and not God. OUCH!

The brightest light we know is the sun created by God. He placed it right where it needs to be for our survival. We need its light and heat for our well-being here on earth. We've all learned to appreciate a great sunny day and we've also all learned not to stare into the glare it gives for it can lead to major problems. In a sense we are challenged the same way by God. We are called to be “light” in a dark world, but we need to make sure we light the path for others to see Jesus clearly, and not blind them so that all they see is us or a form of religious legalism. I pray Jesus shows up in all of us today.

Eternal Threads

In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man wove an intricate heart of selfishness, pride, and contempt. It fit him well in his eternal home. OUCH!

To a person, most people would say they dress the way they feel inside. This is very true, for it is “out of the heart the mouth speaks,” not only verbally but in our actions as well. We really can only do what is in our hearts to do. And though we are great at the “cover-up” or “mask” game with one another, God is still looking on the heart. This day many opportunities will pass our way to help shape our heart for God. He, the Master weaver; is at work on our tapestry for HIM. May our “speech/actions” add the proper hue and texture to the cloth.

God In Silence

To be alone with silence is to be alone with God. - S. Hageman

Even though Jesus was in the desert alone for 40 days, He knew His Father was nearby watching. WOW!

Pop-quizzes, mid-term exams, finals, UGH! We all remember these from our school years. And yet, we survived them. And in all of these settings there was one common denominator - silence. Even the teacher sat by quietly. We often wonder why it seems that God is silent, particularly in those "hard times" of life. Could it be He is testing us? Could it be He is expecting us to show our growth and maturity in the faith. After all, God never gives us a test without preparing us for it beforehand. So if it seems God is distant at this moment in our lives, maybe we should go back and study His Word a bit more to get the faith lift we need to ace our current test. It is an open book test, you know!

Not Done Yet!

A few days after winning 3,000+ souls to Christ, Peter and the other apostles were at it again spreading the Word. AMEN!

One of the most occupied and coziest arenas of life is complacency. The place where we reason with ourselves we’ve done all we were supposed to do, we’ve earned our rest, our mission here has been accomplished. Let’s just sit back and take it easy. This is a dangerous condition of heart. The bible gives many examples of men who worked for the kingdom all their life, then in their later ‘hours’ of life their recreations and activities turned them away from God. God grants us life each day for the express purpose of bringing glory to Him in some manner. Yesterday is done and cannot be recaptured or re-lived. Today is our great opportunity.

Wisdom in Silence

Wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you’d have preferred to talk. – D. Larson

It’s interesting that God gave king Solomon a ‘wise and discerning heart’ rather than a booming, commanding voice. Hmm!

Silence – it seems like the word is dead and gone. We are now a nation of talkers, not communicators, just talkers. We talk back and forth, often only surface issues, nothing deep seated. And we have to offer our opinion, give our input or the latest update; we want to explain ourselves, tell our side of the story, or just shoot the breeze. The idea of sitting alone thinking things through (meditation) or asking God and actually waiting for Him to answer (secret prayer) have all but vanished and have been replaced with talk or other ‘noise’. We’ve been duped into thinking we must be in contact or in touch with someone at all times. God gave us two ears for more than just stereo sound, that we might listen twice as much as we speak. May we all be discerning and wiser today.

Proper Presentation

Present your body as a living sacrifice.  – Romans 12:1

When Peter recognized it was Jesus he saw, he quickly girded himself with the proper attire before coming ashore. Hmm!

We all know the cliché ‘You never get a second chance to make a first impression!’ And I’m sure it’s played out many times over in our lives in various settings both good and bad. And the truth is it plays out in our faith walk as well every day. Whether we are at work, school, vacation, or home; God is thoroughly concerned with the way we present ourselves before others as we live for Him. The bible speaks on grooming, being properly ‘adorned’ for service, being washed, clean, and unnoticeable in our times of fasting, and by not using or offering our ‘temple’ for acts of unrighteousness, including our eyes (what we see) and ears (what we hear). The bible calls us ‘ambassadors’ and that carries a certain air of expectancy with it. This is not to say we always walk around formally dressed and coiffed, but that we are ‘presentable.' The idea is if people are going to look to Jesus to have hope, first they will look to us as representatives of that hope. The question then becomes not how much do you know, but do they want to know you?

God Speaks

The burning bush really got Moses’ attention, and a withered fig tree caught Peter’s eye. They were made to wonder. Hmm!

Admittedly, sleeping through the sermon is nothing new; it has been going on through the ages. And though most of us will proudly proclaim we never would do such a thing, ALL of us often sleep through some of God’s most compelling sermons; for they are not always from the pulpit or the preacher. God is a phenomenal and wise communicator if we would just take the time to look, listen and meditate on what we encounter. A newborn baby, a thunderstorm, blooming flowers, or even a pain in our body. God sends out messages, lessons, or sermon after sermon to see if our reception is any good. “He who has ears let him hear…..” Yes, preaching has its place in the church and we should eagerly look forward to hearing from God this way, but He also loves for us to observe His many messages that come from nature, experiences, and life, for they give greater impact and application to what we hear on any Sunday. So, now that you know…..
